Basically Motivation is a driving force that pushes you towards an action.

Types of Motivation

There are four basic Types of Motivation:

  1. Intrinsic Motivation
  2. Extrinsic Motivation
  3. Primary/ Biological Motivation
  4. Secondary Motivation

Intrinsic Motivation

When the desire of change comes from inside the individual he or she is intrinsically motivated because these tasks give him or her pleasure for example helping other.

Extrinsic Motivation

It comes from outside the person for example punishment, rewards and paychecks etc.

Primary Motivation

They are directly related to homeostasis. They need to be fulfilled. They are essential for survival for example water, air, food, sex, relieve from pain and shelter.

Secondary Motivation

These are motives that you don’t need to fulfill for survival. These are the wants. These are indirectly related to primary motives for example I want biryani to eat, I want a designer dress.

Secondary Motive

These are not biologically based and they must be learned by society. They can be applied to satisfy the personal needs. The secondary motives are as follow.

Power Motive

The struggle for power and control over other is called power motive, such people don’t like to follow someone else rules. They want to control other people rather than being controlled by other people for example Army, Directors Etc.

Achievement Motive

It should not be confused with power motive these are the people who are hardworking and they have certain goals to achieve with greater responsibility they also accept challenges.

Security Motive

Security is used in broad term and broad sense; everyone wants security of life, health, job, future and property etc.

Social Affiliation Motive

We are social animal and we cannot live in isolation. We need to be affiliated with other people throughout the life.

Status and prestige Motive

Some people prefer class and status they wanted to be counted in elite class. They buy such material that can enhance their prestige for example luxury cars and mobile and branded clothes etc.
