Personality
Personality is the characteristic pattern of behavior thoughts and feeling that make an individual unique.
Structure of Personality
ID
Present at the time of birth. Operate at unconscious level. It is driven by pleasure principles. It uses primary process that is formulating or creating mental image of desired object.
EGO
It is developed from ID. It operates at conscious, subconscious and unconscious level. It is based on reality principles that is to satisfy the desire of ID in socially and religiously acceptable manner. It is processed in secondary process. Ego tries to find an object in the real world by legal means or ways.
SUPER EGO
Develops at the age of five. It is based on internalized standard acquired by parental teaching, religious teaching. It provides guidelines to make judgments. Operates at conscious level. It believes in Perfection.
EGO IDEAL
It includes the rules and standards for good behaviors. When super ego is dominant on the personality of person then he or she will be Ego Ideal. It varies from culture to culture.
Defense Mechanism
Sublimation
Freud considers it a sign of maturity. It means converting socially and religiously unacceptable impulses into more socially and religiously acceptable manner.
Repression
Burying a painful thought or feeling from your conscious mind to unconscious mind.
Denial
When you are not accepting the reality because it is too painful for you.
Regression
Reverting to an older and less mature way of handling a stressful situation.
Projection
Attributing your own negative feeling or behavior to someone or something else.
Splitting
Perceiving the world as all good or all bad and nothing moderate or in between.
Displacement
Channeling or changing a feel or thought from its actual source to something or someone else.
Reaction Formation
Adopting a believe attitude or feeling that is totally opposite of the reality.
Rationalization
Justifying your behaviors and motivation with acceptable reasons.
Altruism
Handling your own pain by helping other.
Humor
To find good in bad. Focusing on the funny aspects of the stressful situation.
Suppression
An effort to hide or control unacceptable feeling or thought for example If you like someone but you show that you don’t like.
